Weight uses the entered density and material condition. Scale tickets control actual hauled weight.

Formula

Weight = asphalt volume × density

Unit conversions are completed before multiplication, then results are formatted only at display time to avoid cumulative rounding.

Example calculation

One compacted cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.

At 145 lb/ft³ it weighs 3,915 lb, or 1.96 US tons (1.78 metric tonnes).

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Choose area + thickness if you know the pavement footprint, or volume for a direct conversion.
  2. 2Select the unit attached to each input.
  3. 3Enter the applicable compacted density.
  4. 4Compare pounds, kilograms, US tons, and metric tonnes without rounding intermediate values.

Weight per volume versus weight per area

Weight per cubic foot or cubic yard is controlled by density. Weight per square foot also depends on layer thickness: at 145 lb/ft³, each inch of compacted asphalt weighs about 12.08 lb per square foot.

This distinction matters when checking structural loads, estimating haul weight, or comparing a thin overlay with full-depth pavement.

Use the condition that matches the density

Compacted pavement, uncompacted hot mix in a truck, and reclaimed millings do not necessarily share the same bulk density. Match the density input to the material state represented by the area or volume measurement.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a cubic yard of asphalt weigh?

At 145 lb/ft³, one compacted cubic yard weighs 3,915 lb, about 1.96 US tons. Actual mix density changes the answer.

How much does asphalt weigh per cubic foot?

A common planning value for compacted hot mix is 145 lb/ft³, but project-specific values may differ.

How much does asphalt weigh per square foot?

At 145 lb/ft³, it weighs about 12.08 lb/ft² for each inch of thickness—24.17 lb/ft² at 2 inches and 36.25 lb/ft² at 3 inches.

Can I convert asphalt volume directly to tons?

Yes, once you supply a density appropriate to the mix and condition. Volume alone is not enough.

Why show both tons and tonnes?

A US ton is 2,000 lb while a metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Showing both prevents an approximately 10% unit misunderstanding.
