Recycled asphalt estimator
Asphalt Millings Calculator
Calculate reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for driveways, lanes, and repair areas. Millings are less uniform than plant-produced hot mix, so density and compaction assumptions remain visible and editable.

Estimated results
Asphalt to order (5% allowance)
19.69 US tons
Metric tonnes
17.86 tonnes
Total area
1,200 ft² · 133.33 yd² · 111.48 m²
Compacted volume
300 ft³ · 11.11 yd³ · 8.5 m³
Base quantity before allowance
18.75 US tons
Uses 125 lb/ft³ (2,002 kg/m³). Quantity is a planning estimate; verify mix density, compacted thickness, loads, and order minimums locally.
Formula
Unit conversions are completed before multiplication, then results are formatted only at display time to avoid cumulative rounding.
Example calculation
A 100 ft × 12 ft lane at 3 inches contains 300 ft³, or 11.11 yd³, after compaction.
At an assumed 125 lb/ft³ millings density, that is about 18.75 US tons before an order allowance.
How to use this calculator
- 1Measure the finished millings footprint.
- 2Enter the compacted—not loose stockpile—depth.
- 3Ask the supplier for a bulk or compacted density appropriate to its RAP product.
- 4Use the waste/compaction field for a documented allowance and confirm sold-by-ton or sold-by-yard terms.
Why millings need their own calculator
Recycled asphalt millings contain reclaimed aggregate and aged binder. Gradation, moisture, source pavement, crushing, and compaction can change bulk density more than many users expect. A dedicated tool therefore starts with a lower editable density rather than silently applying the hot-mix default.
RAP, recycled asphalt, crushed asphalt, and asphalt millings are often used interchangeably in supplier listings, but delivered products can differ. Ask what material and density the quoted unit represents.
Compaction and driveway coverage
Loose millings consolidate under grading, rolling, heat, and traffic. Base calculations on desired compacted depth, then ask the supplier or installer for a loose-to-compacted ordering factor. Do not assume a cubic yard in a truck will remain one cubic yard after placement.
A stable millings driveway also depends on drainage, crown or cross-slope, edge confinement, base condition, and suitable compaction equipment. The calculator estimates quantity; it does not determine whether the site is structurally suitable.

OpenFrequently asked questions
How much asphalt millings do I need?
Multiply finished area by compacted depth to get volume, then multiply by a supplier-specific density. Add an allowance only after accounting for the expected loose-to-compacted change.
How many tons are in a cubic yard of millings?
It varies. At 125 lb/ft³, one cubic yard weighs about 1.69 US tons; moisture, gradation, and compaction can move the actual value.
Are millings the same as crushed asphalt?
The terms often overlap, but processing and gradation differ between suppliers. Confirm particle size, contamination limits, and intended application.
What depth should I use for a millings driveway?
Depth depends on the base, soil, drainage, vehicle loads, material, and local practice. Get a site-specific recommendation rather than treating a preset as structural design.
Should I use hot-mix asphalt density for RAP?
Usually not without verification. Loose or compacted millings often have a lower and more variable bulk density than compacted hot mix.
