Sealcoat coverage tool

Asphalt Sealer Calculator

Estimate liquid sealer from measured pavement area and the coverage printed on the selected product. Enter the rate per coat, number of coats, and container size rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all rule.

The 100 ft²/gal starting rate is an editable example. The product label and surface condition control actual coverage.

Formula

Gallons required = Area × number of coats ÷ coverage per gallon

Unit conversions are completed before multiplication, then results are formatted only at display time to avoid cumulative rounding.

Example calculation

A 1,000 ft² driveway needs two coats. If the label states 100 ft² per gallon per coat, total application area is 2,000 ft².

The estimate is 20 gallons, or four 5-gallon containers before any product-specific allowance.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Measure only the asphalt to be sealed and subtract large non-paved areas.
  2. 2Enter the product label's square feet per gallon per coat.
  3. 3Choose the planned number of coats and actual container size.
  4. 4Round containers up, then follow label limits for surface condition, dilution, weather, and application.

Coverage rate comes from the product

Sealer chemistry, solids content, pavement texture, age, porosity, application method, and dilution instructions change coverage. A weathered surface may absorb more material than a previously sealed, smooth surface.

Use the manufacturer's technical data and label as the controlling source. The calculator does not decide whether a surface is ready, which sealer is compatible, or whether one or two coats are required.

Plan whole containers without hiding excess

Gallons required is the mathematical amount; containers required rounds up to a whole purchase unit. The difference is shown implicitly by both outputs, allowing for touch-ups without pretending every opened container is applied.

Crack filler, patching compound, primer, sand additives, and line-marking materials are separate products and are not included in the sealer volume.

Frequently asked questions

How much driveway sealer do I need?

Multiply area by coat count and divide by the product's stated coverage per gallon. Round up to whole containers.

Should I use one coat or two?

Follow the product label and assess surface condition. Some systems specify two thin coats; others use a different application rate.

Why can actual coverage differ?

Texture, porosity, age, previous coatings, application equipment, dilution, and operator technique all affect consumption.

Does the calculator include crack filler?

No. Crack repair and patching materials are estimated separately before sealcoating.

Do I round gallons or containers?

Use the exact gallons for comparison, but purchase enough whole containers to meet or exceed it.
