Choosing a driveway thickness

The 2, 2.5, 3, and 4 inch controls are planning scenarios, not universal construction requirements. A light-duty overlay over a sound surface is a different design from new pavement over soil. The supporting base often matters as much as the asphalt layer.

Traffic, drainage, climate, subgrade strength, base depth, and local requirements all affect the finished section. Ask a local paving contractor or engineer to specify structural thickness before ordering material.

Measure irregular driveways without guessing

For an L-shaped drive, calculate the stem and parking apron separately. Avoid using the longest length times the widest width because that includes unpaved corners. The calculator's area count is useful for repeated bays of the same size; use the general calculator for differently sized sections.

Measure the paved limits after any widening is marked. Small errors affect tonnage more at greater thicknesses, so verify dimensions before arranging a non-returnable hot-mix delivery.

Density, compaction, and truckloads

The default 145 lb/ft³ is a practical compacted hot-mix planning value. Actual density changes with aggregate, binder content, air voids, and the degree of compaction. Use a mix-specific value from the supplier when available.

Truckloads are shown using an editable planning assumption of 20 US tons per load. Legal payload, truck type, haul conditions, and plant policy vary, so use that result only to discuss delivery scheduling.
