Asphalt Price per Ton: Quotes, Units & Cost Factors

A price per ton needs a date, location, mix, quantity, and delivery scope. Use this checklist to turn plant or contractor quotes into comparable project inputs.

Key takeaways

  • Confirm whether the quote uses US short tons or metric tonnes.
  • Ask whether trucking, fuel adjustments, tax, minimum loads, and waiting time are included.
  • Match the quoted mix and quantity to the project specification before comparing price.

Core formula

Material cost = order tons × quoted cost per matching ton unit

What a per-ton quote should identify

Record the plant, mix designation, binder or performance grade when relevant, quote date and expiration, order quantity, ton unit, tax, delivery destination, haul assumptions, and minimum charge. A bare price cannot be safely transferred between projects.

Different mixtures are designed for base, intermediate, surface, porous, high-traffic, or patching applications. The lowest unit price is not meaningful if it does not meet the specified mix or production requirements.

US tons and metric tonnes

A US short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18474 kg). A metric tonne is 1,000 kg (2,204.62 lb). One metric tonne equals about 1.10231 US tons. Convert both quantity and rate before comparing quotes so the roughly 10% unit difference does not distort the decision.

If a metric-tonne price must be converted to a US-ton price, divide it by 1.10231. If a US-ton price must be converted to a metric-tonne price, multiply it by 1.10231.

Quote detailWhy it matters
Ton unitA short ton and metric tonne are not the same mass.
FOB or deliveredFOB normally leaves trucking to the buyer.
Minimum loadSmall projects can be billed above calculated tonnage.
Waiting timeDelays at the site may create truck charges.
Quote expirationBinder and fuel inputs can change pricing.

From price per ton to project material cost

First calculate compacted tonnage from area, thickness, and density. Apply a documented waste or order allowance once. Then multiply the adjusted tons by the matching local rate. Keep delivery separate if the quoted price is plant pickup.

Installed paving cost includes much more than hot mix. Labor, paver and roller mobilization, base preparation, milling, disposal, traffic control, testing, and drainage should not be hidden inside a guessed material rate.

Why prices change

Plant distance, oil and binder inputs, aggregate availability, mix specification, production volume, season, trucking capacity, order size, and local competition all affect a quote. This is why the cost calculator leaves default prices editable instead of labeling a national number as current local fact.

Method note: Calculations use exact published unit relationships and expose density, thickness, and waste assumptions. Construction requirements and prices must be confirmed for the actual project location and specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current price of asphalt per ton?

There is no reliable universal price. Request a dated local quote for the specified mix, quantity, ton unit, and delivery destination.

Does asphalt price per ton include delivery?

Sometimes. Confirm whether the quote is FOB plant or delivered and whether fuel, waiting time, and minimum-load charges are included.

Is the quote per US ton or metric tonne?

Ask explicitly. A US ton is 2,000 lb; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg.

How do I calculate material cost?

Multiply waste-adjusted order tonnage by the local price per the same ton unit, then add delivery or tax if excluded.

Why do small asphalt jobs cost more per ton installed?

Minimum production or delivery quantities and equipment mobilization are spread over fewer tons, increasing the effective installed unit cost.
