How asphalt quantity is calculated

1. Area

Multiply length by width for each rectangle, or enter a measured square-foot, square-yard, or square-meter area. Add sections without overlapping them.

2. Volume

Multiply area by finished compacted thickness. The result is converted into cubic feet, cubic yards, and cubic meters.

3. Weight

Multiply compacted volume by material density, then convert pounds to US tons and kilograms to metric tonnes.

Core formula: Volume = Area × Thickness. Weight = Volume × Density. Material cost = waste-adjusted tons × your local price per matching ton unit.

Thickness and density assumptions

Thickness should describe the finished compacted layer. A loose lift placed before rolling occupies more volume, so mixing loose thickness with compacted density overstates the completed pavement quantity.

The default 145 lb/ft³ (about 2,322 kg/m³) is a useful hot-mix planning value. Actual density varies with mixture, aggregate, binder content, air voids, and compaction. Replace it with project data when available.

Waste allowance and cost

Keep calculated base tonnage visible, then apply a separate order allowance for measurement uncertainty, handwork, uneven surfaces, and site losses. A 5–10% planning range is common, but the appropriate value depends on the job and supplier rules.

Material price varies by mix, location, quantity, plant, haul distance, season, and ton unit. Use a dated local quote. A full project cost also includes relevant labor, preparation, base, removal, delivery, and equipment.

How much asphalt do I need?

Measure the paved area, enter the finished compacted thickness, and apply a compacted density. The calculator returns base tons and a separate order quantity with your selected waste allowance.

What formula does the asphalt calculator use?

Volume equals area × thickness. Weight equals volume × density. US tons equal pounds ÷ 2,000, while metric tonnes equal kilograms ÷ 1,000.

What asphalt density should I enter?

Use the density from the mix design, specification, supplier, or representative test. The 145 lb/ft³ default is a planning value and is not universal.

Should thickness be loose or compacted?

Enter the finished compacted thickness when using a compacted density. The loose placed lift is normally thicker before rolling.

How much waste should I add?

A 5–10% planning allowance is common for measurement uncertainty and edge work, but the right amount depends on geometry, site losses, supplier minimums, and contractor practice. Add it once.

What is the difference between a US ton and a metric tonne?

A US short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18474 kg). A metric tonne is 1,000 kg (2,204.62 lb). The calculator displays both.
