Calculation

1 cubic yard of asphalt is approximately equal to 2 tons:

1 cubic yard ≈ 2 tons

The asphalt tonnage T is equal to the volume V in cubic yards times 2:

T = V × 2

To calculate the volume in cubic yards:

V (cubic yards) = (W × L × H) / 27

W = Width in feet

L = Length in feet

H = Thickness in feet (convert from inches by dividing by 12)

Combining these, the full formula is:

T = ((W × L × (H / 12)) / 27) × 2

Calculate the asphalt tonnage for an area with:

Width = 20 feet

Length = 100 feet

Thickness = 4 inches

Step 1: Convert thickness to feet

H = 4 / 12 = 0.333 feet

Step 2: Calculate volume in cubic yards

V = (20 × 100 × 0.333) / 27 = 24.69 cubic yards

Step 3: Calculate tonnage

T = 24.69 × 2 = 49.38 tons
