Tons-to-area calculator
Asphalt Coverage Calculator
Estimate the compacted area covered by a known quantity of asphalt. Coverage depends on both layer thickness and density, so the tool keeps those assumptions editable.

Theoretical asphalt coverage
82.76 square feet
Square yards
9.2 yd²
Square meters
7.69 m²
Compacted volume
0.51 yd³
Theoretical coverage excludes uneven grade, variable thickness, joints, handwork, and leftover material.
Formula
Unit conversions are completed before multiplication, then results are formatted only at display time to avoid cumulative rounding.
Example calculation
One US ton is 2,000 lb. At 145 lb/ft³ it occupies 13.79 ft³.
At 2 inches it covers about 82.76 ft²; at 3 inches it covers about 55.17 ft².
How to use this calculator
- 1Enter available or delivered US tons.
- 2Choose the finished compacted layer thickness.
- 3Set the compacted density for the mix.
- 4Use the results as theoretical coverage before site losses; compare delivered and placed quantities separately.
Why square feet per ton changes
A thinner layer covers more area from the same mass. A denser mix occupies less volume at the same tonnage and therefore covers less area at a fixed thickness. Any coverage claim should state both assumptions.
The calculator returns theoretical compacted coverage. Irregular grade, variable thickness, handwork, joints, leftover material, and measurement error can reduce practical coverage.
Coverage is useful for reconciliation
Contractors can compare ticketed tons with measured paved area and thickness as a reasonableness check. That is not a substitute for survey data, cores, density testing, or contract measurement procedures, but it can reveal a unit or entry error quickly.

OpenFrequently asked questions
How many square feet does one ton of asphalt cover?
At 145 lb/ft³, one US ton theoretically covers about 82.8 ft² at 2 inches, 66.2 ft² at 2.5 inches, 55.2 ft² at 3 inches, or 41.4 ft² at 4 inches.
Why is driveway coverage sometimes listed differently?
The source may use a different thickness, density, ton definition, or allowance. Check every assumption before comparing values.
Does coverage include waste?
The result is theoretical compacted coverage. Reduce the planned area or increase ordered tons separately for site losses.
Can I enter metric tonnes?
This page uses US tons and displays metric area. Convert metric tonnes to US tons with the weight calculator if needed.
Can tons be converted to area without thickness?
No. A mass can cover very different areas at different layer thicknesses.
